Austria Backyard Ultra -
Frankenmarkt 2026
Austria's first official Backyard Ultra impresses with a new location and a new route!
How many loops do you dare?
7 laps is more than a marathon.
15 laps is 100 km.
24 laps is 100 miles.

We are far from satisfied with what we have!
One more loop!
The Austria Backyard Ultra story began in Frankenmarkt in 2021.
In 2026, we will be back with a new location and a particularly varied route!
The Backyard Ultra mode is very simple.
Every hour the runners start a 6.706 km (=4.167 miles) long course. You have exactly one hour to do this. If you don't finish the round on time and don't start again, you're out! No late start! Very easy! ;-)
The event runs until there is only 1 runner left on the course. => open end
The race takes place according to the official Backyard Ultra regulations of the American original.

Route description – Austria Backyard Ultra Frankenmarkt (from 2026)
The race starts right at the sports field in Frankenmarkt – an atmospheric starting point for a scenic and varied running adventure. The first few meters are slightly uphill on a short, paved section. After a left turn, a bike and footpath leads us out of town – still on asphalt, but already giving us a taste of what's to come.
Shortly afterwards, we leave the asphalt and dive into the countryside – passing under the ÖBB railway line and into the tranquil village of Schwertfern. There, the first small challenge awaits us: the second climb. On a mix of asphalt, forest roads and forest trails, we gain altitude for the second time and cross a small, idyllic wooded area.
We approach the highest point of the route. At the top, there is a small turn of about 200 meters at the gas station before we descend again on a pleasant slope through the village of Küschinken. The surface is asphalt again – ideal for trotting easily into the next section of the route.
Then the trail leads to the left onto a paved gravel road above the ÖBB railway line. This area is particularly interesting because we pass the same section three times – but each time in a different way: once over the railway line and twice through the fitness trail area on either side of the Vöckla river.
From here on, meadow paths dominate. The rest of the route continues along the beautiful fitness trail, a local recreation area with lots of nature, fresh air, and atmosphere. Along the river, over a final small hill, behind the tennis court, and back to the sports field, the path leads us directly to the start/finish area.
Here, the runners are greeted with cheers, music, and a great atmosphere—a well-deserved conclusion to a varied route with a magnificent backdrop that remains both challenging and runnable. A real running experience in the heart of Frankenmarkt's nature!

organizational
-
The route is sufficiently marked and secured by marshals. After 10 laps at the latest, you already know the way blindly. 😉
-
The route covers a wide variety of terrain. A mix of asphalt, meadows, forest roads, and woodland paths makes for a very entertaining run. There are hardly any technical sections and it is easy to run.
-
In the start-finish area there is space for chairs, a cool box, a sleeping tent or a small pavilion for the runners. First come - first serve! Runners who drop out early must give up space in the start-finish area. This allows runners who are still in the race to move closer to the starting line.
-
Sanitary facilities are available near the start-finish area.
-
Refreshment station is in the start-finish area. There is no aid station on the route.
-
The forest is a local recreation area and not a garbage dump. We move in nature and treat animals with respect. Inappropriate behavior in nature (especially throwing away rubbish) will result in immediate disqualification.
-
The run takes place at your own risk and on your own responsibility on a route that is not closed off or monitored. On roads, the StVO must be followed and the traffic observed.
The participant is responsible for accidents or injuries of any kind and must take out adequate insurance himself. The landowner and the organizer are not liable for this.
